Sparking in the surgical department causes panic

Aurangabad, July 17:

A loud noise was heard in the building of the surgical department of the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) on Saturday afternoon causing panic among the patients and employees. It was later found that the noise was due to electrical sparking from a DP.

According to information, on Saturday afternoon a loud noise was heard near the electric DP in front of the surgical department in GMCH. At the same time, there was sparking in ward number 11 near the cabin of the sanitation inspector. As the cable caught fire, the patients and employees panicked. Fortunately the fire was extinguished. But the electricity supply of the surgical department and outpatient ward was disrupted. Maintenance-repair work was undertaken on the battlefield by maintaining the power supply through the generator of the surgical building. The GMCH electrical engineer informed that the repair work of the wires was undertaken immediately. Nobody was injured in the incident. The patient service was not affected as there were less number of patients. In a similar incident on June 22, the wires in the NICU ward were damaged due to sparking. The incidents have become frequent in the GMCH due to old wiring. In the past, the Public Works Department had conducted an electric audit. But the old wiring has not been changed. Giving more information, medical superintendent Dr Suresh Harbade said that it has been reported that the electrical wiring near the DP was damaged due to rains. This caused sparking in the building as well. No major incidents occurred. The power supply was maintained by the generator.
