Weather Update: IMD Warns of Severe Heat Wave in East and South Peninsular India For Next Five Days -Details Inside

A scorching heat wave to severe heat wave conditions are likely to continue over East and south Peninsular India during the next 5 days, according to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).

The IMD said Wednesday that severe heatwave conditions will likely continue in coastal Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, and isolated pockets of Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, as well as interior Karnataka. Isolated areas of Bihar, Jharkhand, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Rayalaseema, and coastal Karnataka are also forecast to experience heatwave conditions during this period.

Heat wave conditions are likely in isolated pockets over Bihar, Jharkhand, coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam, Telangana, and Rayalaseema during the next five days, the IMD said in a statement. Coastal Karnataka can expect them from April 24-26, Tamil Nadu on April 24-25, east Uttar Pradesh from April 25-28, west Uttar Pradesh from April 26-28, and Konkan on April 27-28.

Red Alert Issued for Gangetic West Bengal

The IMD issued a red alert for Gangetic West Bengal, indicating a very high chance of heat illnesses and heatstroke for all age groups. The agency advised extreme caution, especially for vulnerable individuals, and authorities stressed the need for appropriate preventive measures.

Orange alerts were issued for Odisha, Bihar, coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam, interior Karnataka, and Rayalaseema, highlighting the increased risk of heat illness symptoms for those exposed to prolonged sun or strenuous activity. Vulnerable populations, such as children and the elderly, are particularly susceptible.

Relief Expected in Some Regions

Relief may arrive for some areas as a fresh spell of rain with thunderstorms and lightning is forecast over northwest India from April 26 to 28. Northeast India may experience heavy rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds at isolated places on April 24, 28, and 28, according to the IMD.

Rainfall Expected in North and Northeast India

Multiple weather systems, including a cyclonic circulation over the Jammu division, northwest Uttar Pradesh, and a Western Disturbance over Iran, are expected to influence the northern regions. Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand can expect isolated to scattered light to moderate rainfall or snowfall with thunderstorms and lightning from April 24 to 28.

With cyclonic circulations over Madhya Maharashtra and Telangana, and a trough extending from Telangana to south Tamil Nadu, various areas in these regions are likely to experience weather fluctuations. Isolated light rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds is forecast over Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, south Madhya Pradesh, and interior Karnataka from April 24 to 27.
