Mark Zuckerberg: WhatsApp Pay in India launch possible because of UPI system & 140 banks which made it easy

WhatsApp Pay Beta has been available in India for the last two years. However, it was not officially launched due to lack of permission. WhatsApp Pay has now been launched in India. The app was launched last month, said Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook and owner of WhatsApp.

We launched WhatsApp Pay in India last month. This was possible because of UPI system & 140 banks which made it easy. India is the first country to do anything like this, Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook CEO said while interacting on the 'Partnering for Digital India' platform with RIL Chairman & MD Mukesh Ambani.

National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has given permission to launch WhatsApp Pay in India. Zuckerberg also spoke about India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI), calling it a "tremendous public good" created by the government. Facebook's WhatsApp Pay was in November given regulatory approval to roll out its UPI service in India.
