MOS Finance Dr. Bhagwat Karad Hails Interim Budget, Outlines Vision for "Vikasit Bharat"

MOS Finance Bhagwat Karad defended the interim budget, explaining its intricacies and how it will propel India towards becoming a "Vikasit Bharat" (developed nation). He addressed criticisms of it being an "election budget" and emphasized its focus on job creation rather than job seekers. However, Karad acknowledged the absence of major new schemes due to the budget's interim nature but called it "inclusive" and designed for sustained economic growth. He highlighted the government's prioritization of the poor, farmers, women, and youth, deemed crucial for India's overall development.

When asked about the non-functionality of airports in some states despite boosting the UDAN scheme, the Union Minister told LokmatTimes.com, “Airports, Railways, and National Highways will be strengthened. Our government is working to improve the conditions of the existing airports too.” He detailed the "Pradhan Mantri Suryoday Yojna" scheme, offering up to 300 units of free electricity to households through rooftop solar panels. He called it a "bonanza for the middle class" and anticipated its implementation by June 2024, with bank assistance available.

Karad welcomed the ₹1 lakh crore allocated for technological research, aiming to encourage innovation and inspire the private sector to invest more. He linked this to Prime Minister Modi's addition of "Jai Anusandhan" (Hail Research) to the traditional slogans of "Jai Jawan" (Hail the Soldier) and "Jai Kisan" (Hail the Farmer). When asked about the frequent protests by the anganwadi workers and their demand for pension, Karad told LokmatTimes.com, “The health of Anganwadi workers is definitely our priority. Somnath committee is working to resolve their pension issue.”

Karad expressed confidence in the BJP's 2024 election victory and its commitment to implementing all budgeted schemes. He countered opposition criticism of "pro-poor" schemes, highlighting the ₹2.55 lakh crore capex for Indian Railways, new train corridors, and job creation opportunities. Karad concluded by emphasizing the budget's inclusivity, including free cervical cancer vaccination for girls aged 9-14, calling it a "big achievement."
