Sensex hit a record high on Thursday, 31 October, led by gains in banking stocks. It was trading above the 40,000 mark. Meanwhile, Nifty was trading above 11,900.

The Nifty PSU Bank sectoral sub-index was gaining above 3 percent, led by the country's largest lender State Bank of India's stock going up by more than 4 percent.

Indian equity benchmarks opened higher on Thursday making a strong start and extending gains for the fifth consecutive trading session, BloombergQuint reported.

Sensex rose 0.37 percent to touch 40,213, trading near its record high of 40,312.07, while Nifty rose 0.43 percent to 11,894. The broader markets represented by the NSE Nifty 500 Index rose 0.44 percent, the report said.

The market breadth was tilted in favour of buyers on Thursday and about 930 stocks advanced and 392 shares declined on National Stock Exchange.
