Jasprit Bumrah ended the he proceedings on Day 2, as India bowlers failed to dismiss England on the second day of the Chennai test. Dom Bess and Jack Leach added 25 runs for the ninth wicket as India have once again failed to wrap up the opposition's tail quickly. Skipper Joe Root's double ton was the highlight as England ended Day 2 of the first Test in Chennai at 555/8. Root became the first batsman ever to score a double century on his 100th Test as his 218-run marathon knock took England took a commanding position at stumps. 

Starting the day at 263/3, England batted beautifully, perfectly mixing caution and aggression. Root led the way along with Ben Stokes as the duo added 124 runs for the fourth wicket. Stokes fell for 82 in the second session but then Root added another 86 runs with Ollie Pope. In the process, Root also notched up his his fifth double ton in Tests and also his third as skipper. Shahbaz Nadeem eventually ended Root's in the final session. Jos Buttler and Dom Bess then took the responsibility and took England past the 500-run mark. Ishant Sharma, towards the end took two-in two but the England tail wagged around. For India, Ishant, Jasprit Bumrah, R Ashwin and Nadeem took two wickets each.
