Mahendra Singh Dhoni who last represented India at the 2019 World Cup semifinal against New Zealand was recently in the headlines after the BCCI omitted the former World Cup winning captain from the annual retainer list for the period September 2019 to October 2020. Numerous theories has been doing the rounds with many of them stating that Dhoni's career was over with #ThankYouDhoni trending on Twitter. Meanwhile, a section of individuals also criticized BCCI for handling a player of Dhoni's stature in such a haphazard manner.

However former India opener Virender Sehwag has backed BCCI's decision to not award an annual contract to the Ranchi cricketer. Sehwag cited the fact that Dhoni has not played a single international or first class game since his last appearance against kiwis and feels that by not awarding the contract, the selectors have perhaps moved on from MS Dhoni and are trying newer options for the upcoming T20 World Cup. A source close to the BCCI revealed that the decision to not award central contract was purely on technical grounds and by no way means that it is the end of the road for the former skipper.
