AP logs new high of 6,045 Covid cases, 65 deaths in a day

Amaravati, July 22 Andhra Pradesh recorded its highest ever tally of 6,045 new cases in the 24 hours ending 9 a.m. on Wednesday. State health officials said that a high of 65 deaths were reported during this period. The state's Covid tally touched 64,713 and the overall death toll shot up to 823 on Wednesday.

The day saw 49,553 tests conducted, which includes 19,535 rapid antigen tests. Till date, Andhra Pradesh has conducted tests on 14,35,827 samples.

While one district reported new cases in four digit figures, the remaining twelve districts reported cases in triple figures. Topping the list was Visakhapatnam with the highest tally of 1,049 positive cases, while East Godavari followed with 891 cases, and Guntur with 842 cases. Kurnool with 678 cases, and West Godavari with 672 also ranked relatively high on the list over the past 24 hours.

The other districts that reported high numbers include Chittoor with 345 cases, Nellore with 327, and Anantapur with 325 cases.

Srikakulam with 252 cases, Kadapa with 229 cases, Prakasam with 177 cases, Krishna with 151 cases, and Vizianagaram with 107 cases were the low incidence districts over the previous 24 hours.

Wednesday's death toll of 65 is the highest recorded on any single day and comes in the wake of the previous all-time high of 62 on Tuesday.

As per the update, deaths have occurred in 12 of the 13 districts in the state. The overall death toll in Andhra Pradesh has now shot up to 823, state health officials said. Guntur topped the list with a high of 15 deaths, followed by Krishna, West Godavari and East Godavari districts with ten, eight and seven deaths respectively.

Meanwhile five deaths each were reported from Chittoor and Kurnool districts even as Vizianagaram recorded four deaths over the past 24 hours. At the bottom of the list, three districts - Prakasam, Srikakulam, and Visakhapatnam - reported three deaths each, and two districts - Kadapa and Nellore - recorded one death each.

On a positive note, the number of discharges outweighed the new cases over the past 24 hours. In all, 6,494 persons were discharged from hospitals and Covid treatment centres.

As on date, there are 31,763 active cases while 32,127 persons have been declared as cured and discharged in Andhra Pradesh.

Meanwhile, there have been no new additions to the Covid tally from returnees to the state.
