What is TB, How to prevent and stop the spread of tuberculosis?

Tuberculosis (TB) is one of the world’s deadliest infectious diseases. It is one of the top ten leading causes of death worldwide and the leading cause from a single infectious agent, ranking above HIV/AIDS. TB is a leading killer for people with HIV infections. The health, social and economic impacts of tuberculosis today are tremendous. Today as we mark yet another World tuberculosis day let us have a look at some of the ways through which we can prevent and stop the spread of tuberculosis.

How is TB spread

A person who has the active disease in their lungs can spread it through the air. “Active” means the TB germs are multiplying and spreading in your body. If you’re in close contact with someone who has it, you can get it. That’s why doctors advise those who have active TB disease to stay home and away from other people as much as possible, until they’re no longer infectious.

Signs and Symptoms of TB

A bad cough that lasts 3 weeks or longer.
A pain in the chest.
A coughing up blood or sputum (phlegm from deep inside the lungs)
Weakness or fatigue.
Weight loss.
No appetite.
Chills.
Fever.
Sweating at night.

How to prevent the spread of Tuberculosis

Improving ventilation in indoor spaces so there are fewer bacteria in the air.
Using germicidal ultraviolet lamps to kill airborne bacteria in buildings where people at high risk of tuberculosis live or congregate.
Treating latent infection before it becomes active.
Washing your hands after coughing or sneezing.
Stay home from work, school, or other public places.
Use a fan or open windows to move around fresh air.
Don’t use public transportation.
Take all of your medicines as they’re prescribed, until your doctor takes you off them.
After coughing and sneezing seal the tissue in a plastic bag, then throw it away.
