US Capitol violence: Mayor Muriel Bowser extends public emergency in Washington for 15 days

Washington DC Mayor Muriel Bowser on Thursday extended public emergency for 15 more days following the protests and rioting on Capitol Hill by supporters of outgoing President Donald Trump who swarmed inside the building as the lawmakers were counting Electoral College votes to certify President-elect Joe Biden and Vice-President elect Kamala Harris' election victory.

Bowser took to her Twitter account to announce, "I have issued Mayor’s Order 2021-003, extending the public emergency declared earlier today for a total of 15 days, until and unless provided for by further Mayoral Order."

She also issued a press release that states, "President Trump continues to fan rage and violence by contending that the Presidential election was invalid. Persons are dissatisfied with judicial rulings and the findings of State Boards of Elections, and some persons can be expected to continue their violent protests through the inauguration."

At least 4 people have died following the protests and rioting on Capitol Hill by supporters of outgoing President Donald Trump who swarmed inside the building as the lawmakers were counting Electoral College votes to certify President-elect Joe Biden and Vice-President elect Kamala Harris' election victory.

The Police have arrested 52 people following the violence at the US Capitol, reports Reuters. Police say four people died as Trump supporters occupied the US Capitol in Washington DC. One woman was shot by the U.S. Capitol police as a mob tried to break through a barricaded door, and three died in medical emergencies.
