Mumbai: Onion prices skyrocket, wholesale price to cross Rs 100 in few days

Hit by short supply, the price of onions in Mumbai have started to skyrocket. From being available at Rs 50 to Rs 60 per kg a few weeks ago, onions are now being sold at Rs 60 to Rs 70 per kg at APMC wholesale market. In the retail shops, the prices has gone up to Rs 70-90 per kg. A week back, onions were at Rs 40-50/kg at APMC, and retailing at Rs 60-70.

Traders have predicted that the wholesale price of the onions could cross Rs 100 in the next few days. 

The export ban on onions and arrival of Iranian onions failed to stabilize the price.

The recent rains have spoilt most of the onion crops in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, the Mumbai market is solely dependent on produce from Nashik and Pune.
