Mumbai woman booked for passing lewd comments on neighbour's hair and clothes

The Mumbai Police booked a woman for insulting the modesty of her 36-year-old neighbour. The accused, 53, allegedly commented on the victim’s short hair, clothes and called her a “eunuch and prostitute” at times. The incident took place at a Goregaon society where the 36-year-old woman was staying as a tenant. She had moved into the building in December last year and stayed alone. Sources said the victim initially availed tiffin service from the accused but stopped as she didn't like the food. The victim told police that in December, the son of the accused son hosted a party at his residence and played loud music till late night.

The victim said she objected to this following which the accused started passing lewd comments on the victim’s short hair, her clothes whenever she saw her. The matter escalated when the victim was meeting another neighbour on January 11, the accused followed her to the neighbour’s residence and started abusing her. She alleged that the victim would solicit men who came to her residence and called her a prostitute. When the accused didn't stop, the victim informed a policeman staying in the same building. The cop advised her to contact the police control room. On basis of her statement on Saturday, the Goregaon police booked the 53-year-old woman for insulting the modesty of a woman under Section 509 of the IPC ( whoever, intending to insult the modesty of any woman, utters any word, makes any sound or gesture, or exhibits any object, intending that such word or sound shall be heard, or that such gesture or object shall be seen, by such woman, or intrudes upon the privacy of such woman).
