Attention on cancer hospital after Covid

In the last seven months of Covid pandemic, Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) administration did not find time to pay attention to other projects. Entire administration was busy under 24x7. But now when the number of patients is decreasing, the hospital administration has taken the project of cancer hospital. The attempt is being made to keep the proposed place of cancer hospital in its own name. Consequently, the construction work of the project will start in next two months after completing the process.

Vidarbha is becoming capital of oral cancer. At the same time, the cancer patients of breast, uterus, lungs and food pipe have increased. Intervening into the matter, the state government has approved the cancer hospital by upgrading the radiotherapy department at GMCH, Nagpur. Administrative has sanctioned of Rs 76.1058 crore for the construction work of the building. Earlier this work was to be done by Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT) but now this work will be done through Nagpur Metropolitan State Development Authority.

This project was getting delayed due to the construction work, but due to the discussion on it in the last winter session of the state legislature this work gained momentum. The construction work map of the three-floor building, including the ground floor, was approved but the land of the proposed cancer hospital in the Jattarodi section of the TB ward complex is not in the name of the GMCH. So the tender process is stuck. GMCH dean Dr Sajal Mitra took the initiative in this. Due to this, construction work is likely to start in the next two months.

Waiting for the first installment of Rs 20 crore

Rs 76 crore will be spent on the construction work of the cancer hospital. Of these, the first installment of Rs 20 crore is awaited by the GMCH administration. On submission of this fund into account, the tender process of construction work will be completed.

Treatment for all types of cancer

“The proposed land for GMC Cancer Center will be in the name of GMCH soon. This will eliminate the major problem related to construction work. In this center, we are making efforts to provide treatment for all types of cancer.”

- Dr Sajal Mitra, dean, GMCH
