Nagpur, May 3

Commonwealth Games gold medallist in judo Dr Rakesh Badgujar termed judo as a simple self defence technique for all and said the martial art form is an exciting combination of grappling, wrestling, throwing, choke-holds and arm-locks, all of which one could definitely use in a street fight.

He was speaking on the topic of ‘Judo, self defence for all’, in the Karate and Sports Seminar for Physical and Spiritual Development of sportspersons. The series of seminars is being organised by Karate Budokan International (Vidarbha Region) with Kyoshi Harish B Choube, National Chief Instructor, Examiner Karate Budokan International and Sports Coordinator, being the host

. Dr Badgujar who is governing body member, Sport Authority of India, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports New Delhi, India and founder of Badgujar Sports Academy, Amravati. Said “Judo is a simple self defence technique for all. In judo, one learns all of the exciting combinations of grappling, wrestling, throwing, choke-holds and armlocks. All of which one could definitely use in a street fight. A key principle of judo is maximum efficiency with minimal effort, or seiryoku-zenyo. “One practical application is when facing a stronger opponent, the recommended action is to temporarily give way, instead of offering direct resistance, move out of the line of attack, and get the opponent off-balance first, and then use that moment to apply a judo technique. This way, the resistance of the opponent is greatly diminished, and the judo practitioner (judoka) will need to use less energy to defeat the opponent,” said Dr Badgujar. Dr Badgujar added, “Judo teaches close range hand-tohand combat which is highly effective in any street fight. Judo is combat self-defence.Typically, most people who find themselves in a dangerous situation or sudden conflict are often unarmed or have no immediate access to any type of weaponry or defensive equipment (baseball bats, pots and pans, you name it). They are left to fend for themselves with whatever they have handy and all too often it’s not much. So that leaves you and your hands — what do? you do? You defend and if needed, create an opportunity for escape. Judo teaches close range hand-to-hand combat which is highly effective in any street fight.” Second speaker of the session was Renshi Sanjay Athavale and he threw light on natural healing systems of reiki, magnified healing, melchizedek method and spiritual healing. Athavale is Director: Spiritual Solutions, Reiki Divine, Budokan Institute of Martial Arts, Mumbai. He started his session saying, “Spiritual healing has a universal divine source, it is a vast reservoir of higher energies systems. It can be practiced by any person irrespective of any faith, religion and does not interfere, rather encourages and utilises these actions to get best results.” Athavale went on to add, “These are all holistic systems which synergises the mind and body, are non-medicinal and do? not interfere with any other therapies,” he said. Renshi Karunkumar Tirpude proposed a vote of thanks.
