Citizenship Amendment Bill: Assam police opens fire on protesters

The Assam Police opened fire on people protesting against the Citizenship Amendment Bill in Lalungganv. Some people were reportedly injured in it. A senior police officer claimed that the protesters threw stones and bricks at the policemen and when the police tried to pacify them, these people did not leave. The officer did not state the number of people injured in the firing but the protesters claim that at least four people have been injured.

Protesters in Guwahati took to the streets on Thursday to protest against this bill in violation of curfew. Two columns of Army were deployed in Guwahati, where a flag march will be conducted, while one army column was requisitioned for Tripura.

Assam's influential student organization AASU and farmers organization KMSS have called people to protest against the bill. The protesters burnt the effigy of senior BJP leader Hemant Biswa Sarma in Amberoi area. At the same time, students of Cotton University and Handique Girls College are also protesting against the CAB.

All passenger trains have been affected by the violent protests in Assam and Tripura against the Citizenship Amendment Bill. Railways have suspended all passenger trains to and from Assam and Tripura and long distance trains are being stopped in Guwahati. At the same time, the airline IndiGo has canceled all flights to and from Dibrugarh. The company has offered an alternative flight for passengers or a refund. Subhanan Chanda, spokesperson of Northeast Frontier Railway, said that this decision was taken on Wednesday night in view of the security situation, after which many passengers got stuck in Kamakhya and Guwahati. A curfew was imposed in Guwahati on Wednesday night as protesters targeted the house of Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Union Minister Rameshwar Teli.
