Heavily overloaded vehicles damaging major Gurugram roads

Gurugram, Sep 3 A survey by the School of Planning has revealed that the overloading of dumper vehicles has badly damaged the city's major roads.

The condition of Dwarka Expressway, Southern Peripheral Road (SPR), Sohna Road, Pataudi Road and other major roads has become extremely poor because these vehicles carry loads upto four times of their capacity, said a Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) official.

According to the authority officials, recently a team from the School of Planning had checked the road pressure of the vehicles by placing meters on major paths.

"During the survey, it was found that the truck, dumper or tractor trolleys that should ideally load 500 tonnes of weight, carry up to 2,000 tonnes, while the road is not built for this capacity. Every dumper vehicle carries more than 1,500 tonnes of sand or soil in it by overloading. Under such pressure, the roads are getting damaged," said V.S. Kundu, Chief Executive Officer at GMDA.

The officials said that the overloading is also turning small pits into potholes on the roads that make them more accident-prone.

The SPR stretching from Kherki Daula to Ghata village and Dwarka Expressway have been badly damaged. SPR connects Gurugram to Faridabad while Dwarka Expressway connects Delhi to Gurugram.

The GMDA official also stated that the regional transport authority (RTA) officials remain reluctant to check this illegal transportation by the dumpers.

Recently, the development authority had planned to repair the roads and improve the condition of the SPR.
