P. Chidambaram granted bail by Supreme Court in INX Media case

The Supreme Court has granted P. Chidambaram bail in the INX Media case after the former finance minister was jailed for over a 100 days at Tihar Jail.

The Supreme Court has granted P. Chidambaram bail in the INX Media case after the former finance minister was jailed for over a 100 days at Tihar Jail. The court has however asked Chidambaram not to leave the country without permission. The top court has also said that Chidambaram should not give press interviews or make public statements in connection with the case. SC has also directed him to furnish a bail bond of Rs. 2 Lakhs along with two sureties of the same amount. Senior Advocate Abhishek Singhvi, appearing for Chidambaram told reporters that SC granting bail was a victory for human rights. 

Opposing his bail plea, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta appearing for ED, said that economic offences like money laundering are grave in nature as they not only affect the nation's economy but also shake people's faith in the system especially when it is committed by people in power. Chidambaram was first arrested by the CBI on August 21st and was granted bail by the top court on October 22. The former Union Minister's son Karti tweeted, "Phew. At last after 106 days.
