The Delhi Police has arrested the prime accused in the rape of a 12-year-old child. The person a 33-year old man is a resident of Mongolpuri and works in a factory. He also has a case of murder registered against him dating back to 2006 and his involvement is suspected in multiple cases of robbery. The accused is wanted in as many as four other criminal cases. Police officials familiar with the probe said that the child saw the accused committing robbery which is why he sexually assaulted her before attempting to murder the 12-year-old. The girl is currently undergoing treatment at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chairperson Swati Maliwal visited the child's family at AIIMS on Thursday.

"The child's condition is serious, (she) is unconscious. Surgery has been done. (She) will be observed for 24-48 hours," CM Kejriwal had told media outlets following his visit. A doctor at AIIMS told a news agency later in the day that the girl's condition is stable. The CM also said that he personally spoke to Delhi Police Commissioner SN Shrivastava regarding the matter. After he met with the family, CM Kejriwal announced financial aid of Rs 10 lakh for the minor and her kin. According to preliminary reports, the child was attacked all over her face and head with a sharp object in Delhi's Peergarhi area earlier this week. DCW chief Swati Maliwal was the first to bring the matter to the attention of authorities and visit the child's family at AIIMS on Thursday.
