Sridevi was one of B-town's biggest female stars and more than her work it was her personal life which often grabbed media attention.

Sridevi was extremely discreet about her privacy and rarely gave interviews or discussed her private life in them. In the 1980s, she was reported to have married actor Mithun Chakraborty, whom she met on the sets of Jaag Utha Insan (1984) In 1996, she married producer Boney Kapoor. The couple had two daughters, Janhvi (born. 1997), who is herself an actress, and Khushi (born. 2000.

Mithun was already married to Yogeeta Bali and if reports are to go by, Sridevi had asked Mithun to get a divorce from his wife. Reportedly, Sridevi got married to Mithun in 1985 and got it annulled in 1988. The whole thing didn't end here! Mithun's wife Yogeeta allegedly tried to commit suicide when she got to know about his affair with Sridevi. In an interview with leading daily, Yogeeta had said, "I will accept it even if he takes on a second wife."

They were so deeply involved with each other when Mithun was insecure of Boney Kapoor's interest in Sridevi. To prove her love for Mithun, she even tied a rakhi on Boney's wrist. Years later, Boney's first wife Mona Kapoor confirmed this in an interview.

Even after her affair with Mithun was so serious, things just ended abruptly. It was when Sridevi realised that Mithun will never leave Yogeeta and then she decided to leave him.

There were reports that Boney was trying to woo Sridevi on the sets of Mr. India while being married to his first wife Mona Shourie who is Arjun Kapoor's mother.

Soon after all this, stories of being married to Boney Kapoor started doing the rounds, but the two kept it a secret until she delivered her first child - Jhanvi Kapoor.

On 24 February 2018, Sridevi was found dead of an accidental drowning in her guest room at the Jumeirah Emirates Towers Hotel, in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

News of her death featured prominently in Indian and international media.

At first, it was announced by her brother in-law Sanjay Kapoor to the Indian media that the cause of death was a cardiac arrest, but the investigation to her death began early Sunday morning around 2:30, and the case was transferred to Dubai Public Prosecution by Dubai Police, where General Department of Forensic Evidence, Dubai revealed that the cause of death was "accidental drowning.

The film industry, friends, and fans responded to her death through social and other media outlets. Her husband, Boney Kapoor, wrote: “To the world, she was their Chandni, the actor par excellence, their Sridevi, but to me, she was my love, my friend, mother to our girls, my partner. To our daughters, she was their everything, their life. She was the axis around which our family ran.
