At least 4 people have died following the protests and rioting on Capitol Hill by supporters of outgoing President Donald Trump who swarmed inside the building as the lawmakers were counting Electoral College votes to certify President-elect Joe Biden and Vice-President elect Kamala Harris' election victory.

The Police have arrested 52 people following the violence at the US Capitol, reports Reuters. Police say four people died as Trump supporters occupied the US Capitol in Washington DC. One woman was shot by the U.S. Capitol police as a mob tried to break through a barricaded door, and three died in medical emergencies.

The rioting took place after Trump told protestors to repeat his false claim that he won the US election in November.

It interrupted Congress's count of electoral votes to certify President-elect Joe Biden's win. Biden is due to assume the presidency later this month on January 20.

During the violence, Donald Trump sent a tweet urging them to return. But in his tweet, he questioned the selection process. His account was blocked by Twitter to prevent further violence volume_up content_copy share star_border

Political tensions remain over the outcome of the 2020 US presidential election. The pressure was mounting from the former US President Donald Trump, accusing him of rigging the election.

Washington DC Mayor Muriel Bowser on Thursday extended public emergency for 15 more days following the protests and rioting on Capitol Hill by supporters of outgoing President Donald Trump who swarmed inside the building as the lawmakers were counting Electoral College votes to certify President-elect Joe Biden and Vice-President elect Kamala Harris' election victory.

World leaders and top diplomats condemned the US Capitol riots with some pressing President Donald Trump to call off the violence.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a tweet, "Distressed to see news about rioting and violence in Washington DC. Orderly and peaceful transfer of power must continue. The democratic process cannot be allowed to be subverted through unlawful protests."
