India's Covid-19 cases surge with highest daily count in over 7 months

The Union Health Ministry data reports that the number of coronavirus cases in India has risen to 4,47,97,269 after recording 11,109 new infections in a single day. This marks the highest daily case count reported in the last 236 days. Concurrently, the number of individuals undergoing treatment for the virus in the country has escalated to 49,622.

As per the Union Health Ministry data, which was updated on Friday at 8 am, the total number of deaths in India due to coronavirus infections has risen to 5,31,064. This comes after reports of three fatalities each from Delhi and Rajasthan, two each from Chhattisgarh and Punjab, and one each from Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand, and Uttar Pradesh.

Furthermore, it has been reported that Kerala has added nine more names to the list of patients who have lost their lives due to the global pandemic. The updated data indicates that the daily positivity rate in India is 5.01%, while the weekly rate is 4.29%.

The current active cases of coronavirus infection in India are 49,622, accounting for 0.11% of the total caseload. The national recovery rate is 98.70%, with 4,42,16,586 people having recovered from the virus thus far. The COVID-19 case fatality rate in the country is 1.19%. As per the Health Ministry website, 220,66,25,120 doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in India under the nationwide vaccination drive.

India witnessed a sharp surge in COVID-19 cases with numbers crossing the 20 lakh mark on August 7, 2020, followed by 30 lakh on August 23, 2020, and 40 lakh on September 5, 2020. The total number of cases crossed 50 lakhs on September 16, 2020, 60 lakhs on September 28, 2020, 70 lakhs on October 11, 2020, 80 lakhs on October 29, 2020, and 90 lakhs on November 20, 2020.

The number of COVID-19 cases in India crossed one crore on December 19, 2020. Later, on May 4, 2021, the number of infected people surpassed the two crore mark, and on June 23, 2021, it exceeded three crore. Earlier, on January 25, 2020, the total number of infections had crossed the four crore mark.
