Webinar on Elder Mistreatment, Stop! Prevent! organised

Aurangabad, June 19: Department of Geriatrics, Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Aurangabad and Physicians Association, Aurangabad organised a webinar on Elder Mistreatment -Stop! Prevent! here today.

In his welcome address, Physicians Association president Dr Sanjay Patne stressed the necessity for awareness of elderly abuse.

Dr Anand Ambali, Professor, Shri BM Patil Medical College, Vijaypura, Karnataka gave an informative lecture on What is Elder Abuse. He explained different types of Elderly Abuse namely Neglect, Abandonment, Physical, Mental and Financial Abuse.

Commissioner of police Dr Nikhil Gupta discussed the “Preventive laws for Safeguarding Elderly.” He gave an overview of the problems faced by elderly especially and what steps can be taken to overcome them so that the elderly can avail the services designed specifically for them by the government. He spoke about various laws and the need for social reforms for ensuring a healthy and dignified life for the elderly.

Malati Karandikar, secretary, Mukti Sopan Nyas, Old age Home gave an engaging lecture on “Elder care homes -Need of tomorrow.” Dr Mangala Borkar, Professor, Department of Geriatrics, delivered a lecture on “Caregivers-Abusers? Or Abused??” She stressed upon the various problems faced by caregivers of the elderly and how to minimize them. Dr Anant Kulkarni, secretary Physician’s Association co-ordinator of the programme proposed a vote of thanks. Dr Shailja Rao, Associate Professor, Department of Geriatrics conducted the programme. The efforts of geriatric team comprising Dr Mahesh Patil, Dr Ashish Rajan, Dr Zeba Firdous, Dr Shruti Karnik, Dr Sadhana Jaybhaye, Dr Pankaj Mahajan, Dr Kekashan Farooqui, Dr Milind Khade, Dr Momin Aaisha Heena made the event a success.
