ICMR: Covid-19 death rate in Maharashtra is not significantly high

Covid-19 death rate in Maharashtra is not significantly high despite being highest in India, a senior Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) official said on Wednesday.

Dr Raman Gangakhedkar, the chief scientist at the Indian Council of Medical Research, said that even as cases of reported deaths due to novel coronavirus is high in Maharashtra it cannot be termed as significant because total number deaths are relatively low in India.

"We can't decide where the death rate is high or low on the basis of absolute numbers. Death number in India is so low that we can't say that Maharashtra has high numbers as it can be a matter of chance. They may seem high but they are not significantly high," Dr Raman Gangakhedkar said.
