India goes past UK in COVID-19 cases, to become fourth worst-hit country across globe

Amid the rising cases of coronavirus in the country,  India has now taken the fourth spot in the list of nations which is worst affected. The current number of positive cases in the country stands at 2,95,772 going past UK. India is now preceded only by Russia, Brazil and the US.  Russia currently has 4.93 lakh cases and Brazil 7.72 lakh.  The US has the maximum number -- more than 20 lakh. 

The number of fatalities also saw a record single-day increase of over 350 to move closer to the 8,500-mark. A majority of the deaths, 3.483, were reported from Maharashtra. According to the Municipal Corporation Greater Mumbai, 97 deaths and 1,540 new positive cases of COVID-19 were reported in Mumbai. 

The total number of positive cases in the city now stands at 53,985. Tamil Nadu is second only to Maharashtra with 38,716 confirmed cases followed by Delhi with 34,687 cases and Gujarat with 22,067 cases. Chhattisgarh and Himachal Pradesh have registered six COVID-19 fatalities each, Chandigarh have five while Assam has recorded four deaths so far. Meghalaya, Tripura and Ladakh have reported one COVID-19 fatality each, according to ministry data.
