Min Aung Hlaing (the commander-in-chief of the national army) and his number two, Soe Win, as well as the Brigadier General of the 33rd Light Infantry Division, Aung Aung, and his counterpart from the 99th Infantry Division, Than Oo.All of them and their immediate families are now banned from entering the US, Pompeo said while explaining the effect of the sanctions, which do not appear to have any financial impact.The US' top diplomat expressed concern that "the Burmese (Myanmar) government has taken no actions to hold accountable those responsible for human rights violations and abuses," and said there were ongoing "reports of Burmese military committing human rights violations and abuses throughout the country."Pompeo cited as an example the recent disclosure that General Hlaing "ordered the release of the soldiers convicted of extrajudicial killings at Inn Din" who spent only months in prison, while the journalists who told the world about the killings in Inn Din were jailed for more than 500 days."More than 723,000 Rohingyas have fled from Rakhine across the border to Bangladesh since August 2017 due to a military campaign by the army, which has been accused of genocide and ethnic cleansing by the UN.The Burmese military denies the accusations and insists that the operations only responded to an alleged attack by the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army a Rohingya guerrilla group against some 30 police posts on August 25, 2017.( With inputs from IANS )
